The AESHM Transitions Learning Community consists of transfer students enrolled in the undergraduate majors of event management and hospitality management. Through common classes, social opportunities, field trips, community service work, and more students are able to meet others in their major and feel connected to their major early on at Iowa State.

Peer Mentors

Each year the learning community has 2-3 peer mentors who are juniors or seniors in event management and/or hospitality management. Peer mentors come to AESHM 213 regularly and participate in and even lead class discussion. They act as another resource on campus for students—giving advice, suggestions, and support. In addition to this, peer mentors also plan social opportunities, educational events, and study sessions for the learning community participants.

About me: Hello! My name is Kara Gerke and I am a senior from Johnston, IA in event management. I have had three internships throughout my time at Iowa State. My first was in Glencoe, IL at Lake Shore Country Club, the second was in Des Moines, IA at the Iowa Events Center and Wells Fargo Arena and my current internship is here in Ames, IA for the ISU Athletic Department. I have loved my experiences at each internship and have learned what I like (and don’t like!). I consider myself to be an expert in TikTok, although I may not be TikTok famous… yet.

Class: Senior
Major: Event Management
About me: Hi! My name is Katerina and am a senior in Event Management. I am from Clear Lake, Iowa. I am a non-traditional student at Iowa State and before reentering Iowa State in the Fall of 2019 I was practicing real estate in Clear Lake and also received my AA Degree from North Iowa Area Community College. I am involved with the Student Union Board as their National Events Director, and the Event Management Club. During my free time I am a fan of listening and singing to musicals, cooking meals found on Pinterest, and enjoying binge watching shows like This Is Us. I am extremely excited about being a Peer Mentor. I hope not only my experience from Iowa State but also my life experience can be of help to any student.
