Lydia Broadhead exhibits passion for event planning through experiences and involvement

Lydia originally had the idea to go into interior design, but when she found out that Iowa State had a good event management program, she quickly changed her major to that. Being the planner she is, Lydia knew that choosing the event planning major would put her on the right track for success.

“I am a very organized person and have loved planning trips, events, and just my days,” Lydia said. “When I found out there was a major where I could put these interests in my job field, I was so excited.”

Since being at Iowa State, Lydia has immersed herself in clubs and organizations that have helped her get an idea for what her future career could be.

Lydia participates in the Winterfest Club, which is a combination of winter-themed events, activities, displays, and traditions to help students relieve their end-of-semester stress and connect with the Ames community. Her role this past year was to help plan and execute the seasonal beverage tasting station and the cookie decorating station.

“In Winterfest Club, I really got hands-on experience of working with other people in order to make an event successful,” Lydia said. “This is super essential in the job field.”

Lydia will also be working as an Event Staff at the ISU Alumni Center, where she will be in charge of setting up, taking down events, and working any events that take place there. She will also have the role of working the Cyclone Central tailgates.

“I will be working on any events that are happening at the Alumni Center. They host a lot of things like weddings, meetings, greek life, formals, retirement parties, and any get-togethers,” Lydia said. “So I will be the event staff for that and really get that hands-on experience for my major.”

After graduation, Lydia hopes to work as a wedding planner.

“A great thing about event management is that it offers such a wide variety of job opportunities, and through your years at Iowa State, your interests will most likely change, and that’s completely fine!”
