Lindsey Skaaland displays creative passion through work and involvement
As a sophomore majoring in apparel merchandising, Lindsey Skaaland immediately involved herself in many opportunities that helped affirm her decision on choosing the right major for her.
“I came for The Fashion Show in spring of 2019, and it was the final point for me where I knew [Iowa State] was where I wanted to be,” Lindsey said. “I wanted to be a part of that.”
Since then, Lindsey has worked with The Fashion Show and hopes to be more involved with it in the future. She was a Behind the Scenes committee member, and helped plan Behind the Scenes Day—an annual event hosted the day before The Fashion Show. This day allows prospective and transfer students to attend workshops put on by the apparel merchandising program and see the dress rehearsal for the fashion show.
“I went to Behind the Scenes Day in high school, and I went to The Fashion Show,” Lindsey said. It was cool to be a part of the actual behind-the-scenes part of it.”
In addition to her club involvement, Linsey works at Innovate 1858, a student-operated retail store on campus. Starting as a sales associate, she quickly moved to inventory management and works on many other managerial projects as well.
“It’s been fun [working at Innovate 1858] and being a part of the buying process and everything. I really love it here,” Lindsey said. “I learn a lot, and I work with a lot of the professors in my major so that’s been really fun.”
Although she’s not quite sure what she wants to do after graduating college, Lindsey’s involvement is on track with her career aspirations.
“Right now, I’m really into the idea of working for fashion shows or being a stylist,” Lindsey said. “I would love to be a TV show stylist.”
