In the Textile Testing Lab, basic physical properties of textile materials such as the strength, the abrasion resistance, the flammability, the wicking property, the air permeability, and the color fastness can be measured according to various ASTM and AATCC standards. These physical properties are critical that determine the fundamental of a product.

Here we carry out fundamental textile material property testing and courses such as AMD 204, AMD 305, AMD 404, and AMD 499.

AMD 204: Textile Science — Textile fibers, yarns, fabrication, coloration, and finishes. Quality and performance application to textile products.

AMD 305: Quality Assurance of Textiles and Apparel — Principles of product and materials evaluation and quality assurance. Developing specifications and using standard practices for evaluating materials, product characteristics, performance, and quality.

A M D 404: Innovative Textiles
Theories and principles of textile science. Textile product serviceability. Effect of fiber structure on properties and performance. New developments in textiles

AMD 499: Undergraduate Research — Research experience in textiles and clothing with application to a selected program.

Electro Spinning

This Electro spinning equipment is located at Laboratories for Functional Textiles & Protective Clothing in Iowa State University. The research team includes textile material study and development, mechanism and modeling study, hazards simulation, clothing performance analysis and prediction, as well as new methods and standard development.

Atlas Air Permeability Tester

An Atlas Air Permeability Tester will be used to test the air permeability (breathability) of sample fabrics according to ASTM standards.

Agilent Cary 300 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer Tester

An Agilent Cary 300 UV-Vis spectrophotometer is to test UV radiation transmission through sample fabrics and to determine the wavelength dependent abortion and reflection properties. In addition, it can perform a color analysis and measure various sets of color coordination data.

Instron Universal Tensile Tester

An Instron universal tensile tester will be used to test the tensile strength, breaking strength, tearing strength, and seam strength of test samples such as garment parts, fabrics, and fibers according to ASTM standards.

Taber Abrasion Tester

A Taber abrasion tester will be used to test abrasion resistance of sample fabrics according to ASTM standard.

Atlas Random Tumble Tester

An Atlas random tumble tester will be used to test the pilling resistance of sample fabrics according to ASTM standards.

Vertical Flame Tester

A vertical flame tester will be used to test the flammability of samples under controlled environmental conditions. Flame time, char length, visible damage to the test specimen, and melting or dripping are among the parameters that will be measured and recorded.

Color Fastness Tester

Various colorfastness tests against washing (Launder-O-meter), light (Day light), rubbing (Crocking) can tested according to AATCC or ISO standards.
