Overall Experience
Participating in the study abroad program to Malaysia was an incredible journey that combined academic learning with cultural immersion. The program provided me with opportunities to engage in hands-on research projects, collaborate with international peers, and explore the vibrant culture and heritage of Malaysia. It was a transformative experience that enhanced my understanding of global tourism practices, enriched my academic perspective, and contributed to my personal growth in ways I had not anticipated.
Learning experience
One of the most valuable learning experiences was collaborating on a research project exploring how VR technology can alleviate uncertainty among senior medical tourists. This hands-on project involved creating and analyzing 360-degree video content for Sunway Medical Centre, which provided practical insights into how technology can enhance the tourism experience. It also highlighted challenges like communication barriers and accessibility issues in medical tourism. This experience emphasized the transformative potential of technology and its role in shaping future tourism trends.
Memorable experience
One of my most memorable experiences was visiting iconic cultural landmarks such as the Batu Caves and Malacca. These sites offered a deeper appreciation for Malaysia's rich cultural diversity and history. Another standout moment was sampling authentic Malaysian cuisine, which showcased the country’s unique blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences. These experiences not only broadened my cultural understanding but also enriched my appreciation for the role of cultural and culinary tourism in defining a destination’s identity.
What did you not expect?
I was surprised by the emphasis on sustainability at the night theme park we visited. The integration of eco-friendly practices into large-scale entertainment facilities was impressive and inspiring. This unexpected observation has changed how I approach my profession, encouraging me to prioritize sustainability in both academic research and professional decision-making. It has also influenced my personal life by reinforcing the importance of environmentally conscious practices in everyday actions.
What advice would you give?
My advice for other students is to approach the study abroad experience with an open mind and a willingness to step out of their comfort zones. Engage actively with both the academic and cultural aspects of the program—ask questions, participate in discussions, and connect with local communities. These opportunities will not only enrich your understanding of the world but also provide skills and perspectives that will benefit you throughout your career and life. Make the most of every moment, as the experiences and lessons gained are invaluable and will stay with you forever.
How has this experience impacted your life?
This experience has had a profound impact on multiple aspects of my life. Academically, it expanded my understanding of medical tourism, especially in relation to emerging technologies like VR, and inspired me to pursue innovative, interdisciplinary research. Personally, it strengthened my adaptability and confidence in navigating unfamiliar environments and collaborating with diverse groups. For my long-term career, this program reaffirmed my commitment to research in sustainable and ethical tourism practices, equipping me with the tools to address global challenges and contribute meaningfully to the field.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first learned about this opportunity through Dr. SoJung Lee, who serves as the DOGE and my major professor. She shared the details of the program, highlighting its focus on medical tourism and cultural immersion, and strongly encouraged me to participate.
