Overall Experience
Studying abroad in Florence was a transformative experience and honestly the best time of my life. I not only gained a deeper appreciation for Italy’s rich heritage but also grew personally and academically. Exploring many beautiful countries, trying authentic cuisine, and connecting with people from around the world made it an unforgettable chapter of my life.
Learning experience
My most valuable learning experience was in my Palaces of Florence class. Initially, I took it just to fulfill a history credit, but it quickly became one of my favorite courses. Each week, we visited a different iconic palace, learning about the rich history behind these architectural marvels. It was fascinating to not only learn about the cultural and political significance of these buildings but also to connect that history to the very streets I walked every day. The class gave me a deeper appreciation for Florence’s past and a new perspective on the city I was living in.
Memorable experience
One of my most memorable experiences was traveling to Croatia with a group of girls I met during orientation. At the time, we were still getting to know each other, but now we’re close friends who still stay in touch. Croatia was beautiful, and one of the highlights was a boat trip where we got to swim in caves that glowed from the sunlight reflecting off the water. The whole experience was amazing and unforgettable and still my favorite trip to this day.
What did you not expect?
One thing I didn’t expect about studying abroad was how much it would challenge me to step outside my comfort zone. I thought I’d mostly be a tourist, but instead, I found myself adapting to a completely new way of life. Whether it was navigating public transportation, figuring out daily routines, or adjusting to cultural differences, everything pushed me to be more independent and flexible. It wasn’t always easy, but it helped me grow in ways I hadn’t expected.
What advice would you give?
My biggest piece of advice is do it! Studying abroad was hands down the best experience of my life, and I miss it every day. Another key takeaway is to say yes to everything. Whether it’s a spontaneous dinner or staying up too late with friends before class, take every opportunity. We’re young, and these moments might not come around again. Money will always come and go, but the memories and experiences you gain from studying abroad will stay with you forever.
How has this experience impacted your life?
Studying abroad completely reshaped my perspective on the world and myself. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to embrace uncertainty, adaptability, and independence. I gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures and developed a broader worldview. The friendships I formed, the challenges I faced, and the experiences I had all contributed to a sense of confidence and growth I didn’t expect.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first heard about studying abroad in AESHM 1110 as a freshman. At the time, it seemed like a cool idea, but I didn’t take it too seriously. Then, during AESHM 3110, my friend and I randomly decided we wanted to make it happen. We reached out to the study abroad office, got more details, and began the process from there.
