Overall Experience
My study abroad experience in Malaysia was truly transformative and enriching. Exploring the vibrant culture, trying authentic foods, and engaging in unique activities like creating handicrafts and visiting museums gave me meaningful insights and unforgettable memories. Visiting universities and facilities inspired me to think about new research ideas, including innovation and cultural tourism, and strengthened my desire for future collaborations. This program also helped me build stronger connections with my peers and professors.
Learning experience
The most valuable learning experience I encountered during the study abroad program was visiting Sunway's Senior Assisted Living and hospital facilities. Seeing the modern and thoughtfully designed facilities, such as the gym, craft rooms, and other activity spaces, gave me insights into how different countries approach elder care and resource allocation. This experience was eye-opening, highlighting the stark disparities in access to resources and the importance of innovative solutions in addressing social inequalities.
Memorable experience
The most memorable experience from my study abroad program was creating handicrafts during our cultural activities. Working with metal and paints, something I had never done before, was both challenging and rewarding. The intricate process of designing and crafting these items gave me a deeper appreciation for Malaysian artistry and traditions. This hands-on activity not only allowed me to connect with the local culture but also inspired me to explore new skills and creative outlets I had never considered before.
What did you not expect?
One thing that surprised me was the differences in resources between different universities and the focus they have. This unexpected realization has deeply impacted my perspective on social equity and the importance of addressing challenges for all populations. It has motivated me to approach my profession with a greater sense of responsibility to create inclusive solutions, whether through research or practical applications. In my life, it has reinforced the need to advocate for equal opportunities and resource accessibility.
What advice would you give?
My advice for students who want to study abroad is to embrace the experience with an open mind and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Be prepared for challenges, whether it’s adapting to a new culture, unfamiliar foods, or logistical hiccups, and view them as opportunities to grow and learn. Build connections with your peers, professors, and locals, as these relationships can provide support, insights, and lasting memories.
How has this experience impacted your life?
It expanded my understanding of cultural diversity and global issues, helping me become more adaptable and open-minded. Educationally, it inspired me to explore new research areas, such as innovation, cultural tourism, and cross-cultural collaboration, while reinforcing the value of interdisciplinary learning. For my long-term career goals, this experience strengthened my interest in pursuing international research opportunities and collaborations, as well as fostering initiatives that bridge cultural gaps and promote global understanding. It also solidified my commitment to a career that integrates academic growth with meaningful global impact.
