Responsibilities
At my internship, I was responsible for attaining knowledge of products and vendors in the clothing category, as well as assisting in the analysis of sales/vendor performance. With my analysis of our open-to-buy, I was able to determine inventory and markdown needs. I worked with my buyer to reorder inventory and source new products. With this I also had the opportunity to work with vendors and learn about successful buying methods. I was also responsible for varying duties including special sales events (i.e. Back to School, New Student Orientation, Iowa State Fair, Football Tailgate, Postseason Sports,Holiday Sales, etc).
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment throughout this experience was gaining the confidence to speak to vendors, select artwork, and successfully place orders that will be sold in the store.
Learning experience
I would say the greatest lesson I learned from this experience was how to put my knowledge and skills from the classroom into practice. While doing so, I was able to see how useful enthusiasm is and how important this is for workplace culture.
What advice would you give?
My biggest advice for future students in my major would be to stay open-minded and ready to learn. The skills you learn here are important and can guarantee success. I would also recommend networking as much as you can. You never know who you could meet and the opportunities they could offer you. And finally, be yourself! Iowa State is lucky to have you.
