Responsibilities
As a Human Resources and International Student Program Intern, my responsibilities include helping out the Human Resources Director and Human Resources Generalist with the day to day operations of the Human Resources department, as well as serving as a Resident Assistant for the international students that Adventureland recruits. Some of my daily tasks include scanning and emailing documents to the proper people, utilizing ADP to hire new employees, and help run the Employee Base Room. In addition, I serve as a Resident Assistant, which means I am on call 24/7 for the students to contact me with any issues they have, whether that be at housing or not.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during my internship has been learning how to fully interview and hire a new employee. At the beginning of the season, the HR Director and HR Generalist had mentioned to myself that they would walk us through the steps of onboarding new employees. However, since the interview and hiring process takes quite a few steps, they did not feel the need to pass that big responsibility on to myself. Despite this, one day they both felt that I was able to do this on my own, and since that moment, I have interviewed and hired quite a few new employees. That has been my greatest accomplishment.
Learning experience
I have learned that this industry is not your typical 8 to 4 or 9 to 5 career. There are several times, more often than not, that I have put in more hours than scheduled or expected. Definitely understanding this has been one of the greatest lessons from my experience. Also, many careers are very standard and have structured days. However, I have also learned that this experience is far from the normal. Each day is completely different from the day before, despite how well you plan for the day to go. I feel that this experience has really helped me come to a realization of how this industry works, and I am loving every second of it.
What advice would you give?
My advice for future students in my major would be to always be willing to put in the extra work or walk the extra mile. Many times, we are always rushing to finish our work to be out of work at a scheduled time. However, I have learned that with taking time to do things correctly, despite the couple of extra minutes it will take, will help save you in the long run. Definitely going above and beyond your expected work will help set you apart for future opportunities with a company.
