Olivia Sorenson
Responsibilities
In addition to job-essential duties such as event set up and serving; I am in charge of managing Banquet Bars and Related Accounting, fulfilling billing requirements, supervising Small Groups of Employees for Set Up and Closing Shifts and supervising Small to Medium Sized Events (10-150 People). In addition I work in communication between other departments such as kitchen, sales, Iowa Stater Restaurant, housekeeping, and front desk and preparation of paperwork and signage for the next day's events.
Accomplishments
During a particularly busy Saturday, with three major events happening at the same time, I was entrusted with taking the lead on two of the three events. Both events went smoothly and all of the guests were pleased with their experience. For my first time leading any event, to head two at the same time successfully is something that I am very proud of.
Learning experience
Patience and Communication Is Key. This industry has a frequent turnover, so it is imperative to ensure all vital terminology and expectations are clearly established and understood as soon as possible so that new employees can feel more prepared and confident sooner rather than later.
What advice would you give?
The opportunities for Event Management Majors are seemingly endless. Explore all of them. Take this time to explore and not worry about longevity yet. Nonprofits, Hotels, Sports, Corporations, Education, and Restaurants all utilize event managers. What you may think you are interested in may not be what you actually enjoy doing, while the most unexpected internship could lead to the job of your dreams.
