During my time at Marchesa, I served as a Product Development Intern for the Couture Research and Development team. My team was in charge of the materials, trims, fabric selections and custom fabric designs that go in to each beautiful Marchesa gown. My tasks included: Assisting my team with jobs regarding the organization and materials of the spring 2020 Couture Collection, researching trends, colors, and materials in the current market, completing administrative and organizational tasks to file fabrics, trims, layerings and prepared and cut yardages of fabric to be sent to production. I also ran all over the busy New York Garment District to pick up and drop off different fabric and trims from vendors.

Everyday at Marchesa was so different and there were so many little projects my supervisors would have me complete. My greatest accomplishments were when my supervisors would give me great feedback on these tasks. If I created a new fabric texture or color story they enjoyed, they would put it on a board to present to the creative director, and this always was super exciting for me.

What advice would you give?

You will find as an intern, it is sometimes hard to feel like what you are doing even matters and there could even be days you feel you are not doing much work. Really, in the grand scheme of things, every little task leads towards the greater goal and the finished product. The important thing to do is observe observe observe. During an internship, you have the opportunity to be the eyes and ears of a brand you look up to. You are finally seeing how the industry works. You need to soak in everything you see like a sponge. Really utilize this. I took so many notes and pictures throughout the summer. So even if you don't have a lot of tasks in the day, you should still be taking away so many lessons just from what you are observing around you.
