Responsibilities

Throughout this internship, I have had the opportunity to plan events for Barefoot. In June, I planned promotional events targeted towards Iowa State orientation where customers could spin a wheel featuring different prizes if they followed our Instagram. I worked with other local businesses in Ames including Cookies Etc., Campus Cycle, and Cooks Emporium to be a part of my events as well. These events were able to increase our Instagram following from 12.5K to 12.9K in just one month! For the month of August, I will be planning a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) event where customers can come into the store and we will teach them how to cut and customize their own t-shirts. These events are something that I will carry over into the fall once football season starts.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment is successfully completing 11 promotional events in the month of June while planning them all on my own. I was also offered a raise which is an added bonus!

Learning experience

The greatest lesson I have learned from my experience is that disappointment is inevitable. There are going to be times when your event doesn't go as planned or it doesn't turn out the way you had hoped. The key to this is to stay positive and know that you put your best work out on the table. At the end of the day, that's all that matters! Additionally, this internship is a learning process that will benefit you in the future with your professional career so soak up every detail of it.

What advice would you give?

I had started looking for internships in February and became extremely stressed out from the process. I was scared I wasn't going to find an internship for the summer. However, do not stress out about this. There are several internship opportunities that pop up each week. Bria Jenkins or the College of Health and Human Sciences Career Services office are more than willing to help you find the perfect internship!
