Jaydan Murphy
Responsibilities
The overall concept of this internship is to learn the in's and out's of a country club! I have started from the ground up. I started out serving in banquets, then Iowa Grille (casual dining), and finally Candlelight (formal dining). After learning the ropes of serving, I got to manage in each positions a few times. In between doing that, I have done some other little things around the club too. I have bartended, worked the beverage carts, worked as the receptionist, and worked in the kitchen. I will be working grounds (golf course keeping), housekeeping, and a few other things as well. My internship is only about half over, and I still have a lot to learn!
Accomplishments
I believe my greatest accomplishments from my experience at Des Moines Golf would have to be problem solving and connecting with people. Working at a country club, every single day is a bit different and that is where the problem solving comes into play. At Des Moines Golf & Country Club, there are about 1500 members. Some come in regularly, while others do not. I have been able to build strong relationships with members and other employees as well.
What advice would you give?
Some advise I would give for future students would be to go out of your comfort zone. I have never been the person that likes to go out of my comfort zone, but accepting the internship position at Des Moines Golf was just the beginning for me. I have put myself out there a little more and it has lead to incredible opportunities!
