Responsibilities
Some responsibilities I have during the week are helping with small office tasks and with a florist. Once a week I will help assist at Shelly Sarver Designs with many small jobs such as floral arrangements, cleaning, assorting inventory, etc. Besides helping Shelly, I also will work office hours for Honey and Joy Events when help is needed. During the weekends there is mainly one day that I help with weddings for the entire day. If I work multiple days on the weekend it may only consist of traveling back home or dropping off rentals to my boss.
Accomplishments
The greatest accomplishment I had while working at my internship was getting the experience in both wedding and the floral industry. Weddings have taught me how to work well with clients and other people while preparing for the event. Floral has taught me about small details and how to prepare for an event.
Learning experience
The greatest lessons I have learned lies within communication and time. Communication is key within the events industry, especially while planning a wedding. It is important that all team members know of different shifts and changes in a schedule. Communication helps the flow of an event run smoothly. Time is just as equally important as communication. Showing up 15-20 minutes ahead of time is a way to show that you are professional and prepared for your work day.
What advice would you give?
I encourage students in the event industry to try multiple kinds of jobs. The events industry can range in many jobs such as corporate, sports, weddings, traveling, hospitality, etc. Figure out what your top three choices would be and explore those options. If there is one job title you have a passion for, work for various companies. Extend your name out into the world.
