As an intern at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Alumni Relations, I am responsible for helping plan multiple events for this coming fall. The events they have this coming fall is their annual Alumni Reunion, the ADA reception in San Francisco, and their Dean's Club Dinner. I also have to plan the Continuing Education lectures and events. One thing I have enjoyed planning in all these events is the menus, which is one of my responsibilities.
My greatest accomplishment during this internship is planning the ADA reception that will be in San Francisco. I planned this event from start to finish. I enjoyed planning the menu, because even though this event is at a Marriott hotel, their menu choices are very different that what the Marriott menu choices are like here in Iowa. I also helped design the postcard for this event that gets sent to every University of Iowa College of Dentistry alumni.
I have learned a lot in this internship. I have learned what kind of planning goes into these kinds of events and how organized one has to be in this industry overall. I have learned a lot about contracts and agreements, and what to look for and what questions to ask before signing one for an event.
What advice would you give?
I encourage students to always ask questions in their internship, as that is how they are doing to learn and help them succeed. I also advise students to go into their internship with an open mind and the willing to learn.
