Responsibilities

My responsibilities during my internship with the Iowa State University Lectures Program were assisting with all spring events including planning logistics, hospitality accommodations, and communicating with speakers and collaborators. I would also serve as the host for lecture events in the evening. During this time, I would ensure A/V was setup and running smoothly, greeted speakers, explained the flow of the event to speakers and collaborators, worked with facility managers if there were any last-minute changes, and checked-in with event partners to make sure all their needs were met.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship with the Iowa State University Lectures Program was when I was able to work my first event on my own. This experience allowed me to be more confident in my skills and abilities. This also showed me the things that I can work on and become better at the next time I am working an event.

Learning experience

One of the lessons I have learned during my internship experience with the Iowa State University Lectures Program was that communication is key. I always believed that my communication skills were pretty good, but this experience has allowed me to become an even better communicator in writing and orally. I also learned a lot about confidence during my internship. Prior to this experience I didn't have much on-site event experience, so getting out of my comfort zone and working events on my own has allowed me to gain the confidence I need.

What advice would you give?

The advice I would give to future event management students would be to be open to new adventures and get as much experience as possible. This will ensure that you have given all different types of events a shot, you know what you do and don't like in a job, and it makes you a well-rounded candidate for future opportunities!
