Responsibilities

As the Event and CME intern at Iowa Medical Society my responsibilities were: planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the educational/informational offerings, marketing of educational/informational offerings, obtaining appropriate continuing education credit for assigned educational/informational offerings, and assisting with the general operations of the IMS Continuing Medical Education (CME) Accreditation Program, the general operations of the Iowa Medical Society Foundation CME Provider Program and assisting with the planning and execution of IMS meetings and events.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship with Iowa Medical Society was constructing an analysis report of how the organization could possibly rent out their large board room to produce extra income. My supervisor sent this report to the CEO of the company. He said that he would seriously consider the proposal and share the report with the Board of Directors.

Learning experience

The greatest lesson that I learned from my internship experience was to be confident and not be afraid to voice my opinions and ask questions. I found that the more confident I acted and the more I spoke up during meetings, the more the other people in the office respected me. I ended up creating relationships with colleagues from other departments, who may be useful contacts in the future.

What advice would you give?

The biggest piece of advice that I have for future students would be to not be afraid to ask questions. It is better to ask a lot of questions than to assume something and do it wrong. There were multiple times through out my internship that I was glad that I asked a question because if I had not, it would have caused major issues. Asking questions does not make you seem incapable, it shows that you want to be sure to do the work correctly.
