Responsibilities
My responsibilities during my internship are set-up, tear-down, laundry, bartending, florals, and day-of-coordinating. During set-up and tear-down, I read the invoice. The invoice tells me exactly what the room needs to look like, what decor needs to be laid out, and what florals are needed. I bartend on occasion and fill in during cocktail hours. An interesting part of the internship includes florals. I strip and de thorn roses, make boutonnieres, bride maids' bouquets, and center pieces. I also get to be the day of coordinator; this takes place on wedding day, and I am in-charge of the last-minute details and making sure the bridal party is taken care of.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during my internship was coordinating a wedding without help. I got to take charge and coordinate the rehearsal and the ceremony. This was the greatest accomplishment because I was able to show my skills and I also learned valuable lessons that I could only learn by being in charge. There were many other important accomplishments, but coordinating was my top accomplishment.
Learning experience
Some of the greatest lessons I have learned from my experience include being flexible and being able to step in last minute when needed. Another valuable lesson was communication. During wedding days, it can be very stressful and keeping strong communication between co-workers is a good way to insure there are no issues. Learning to become a better communicator is something I have become stronger with since having my internship. The communication skills I have learned will help with my future career and personal life.
What advice would you give?
My advice to future students in Event Management would be to keep an open mind about all the possibilities your major has to offer. Don't be afraid to reach out to any business, you never know what people you will meet. Opportunities come in many different directions. Stay positive and enjoy every minute.
