Andy Mogle, a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher from Norwalk High School and Iowa State Family and Consumer Sciences Education graduate has been named 2008 Iowa Teacher of the Year. Mogle was previously a chef and restaurant manager before earning a master's in Family and C o nsumer Sciences Education from ISU in 1999. Since Mogle started teaching at Norwalk High School, his culinary arts program has skyrocketed in enrollment. Mogle teaches seven classes in an eight period day including Foods and nutrition, Food Preparation and Technology and Culinary Arts.

 

Mogle is known for telling his students on the first day of class that they can earn an F if they want to. Then he says, " But I cannot belive how incredibly lazy you'd have to be as a student and scholar to get an F." Students at Norwalk high school claim that "Mr. Mogle is really nice, but not nice enough to let students take advantage of him."

 

His principal, Dale Barnhill, stated that "He has extremely high expectations and the kids keep rising to meet those expectations." Mogle also started the Warrior Cafe. The cafe offerst students the opportunity to research and design menus, prepare the food, serve it twice weekly to faculty, parents, and other community members.

 

When asked about Family and Consumer Sciences, he stated "Everyone talks about the importance of math, English, science and social studies. My kids to class and practice English, science, mather and those other skills. I call it learning to learn."
